The Mission of the Research Center for Geroeducation
In the study programs of King Sigismund College a mentoring system has been formed, in the framework of which mentor teachers provide help to mature-aged students so that they can satisfactorily pass their exams. As a result, the positive effects of this system can be observed even after a semester: the study results of mature-aged students are getting better, and the number of mature-aged students applying to the college is rising.
Apart from this, an academic workshop called Research Center for Gerontoeducation has been formed, which deals with the situation and issues of seniors. The more and more widespread use of this strange word indicates that in the more developed countries of the world the problems of aging societies and the widening age pyramid as a result of higher life expectancy have been addressed. Thus, it is vital that seniors be not only in good health but be able to stay in the labor market as long as possible, which also necessitates their retraining and continuing education (unfortunately, Hungary is the last among the EU countries in the number of retraining and further training courses offered to seniors). The research center organizes conferences, roundtable discussions, debates and book launches in these topics, the documentation and results of which will be published on the college’s website in the future as well.
